three protagonists of this palace drama are Charles himself, weary and disillusioned, seeking
too often the tragic consolation of the bottle; Louise, the violet-eyed and lovely princess
whom Rome knew as the 'Queen of Hearts'; and the volcanic Count Vittorio Alfieri, who was not
merely to be the master of a queen but one of the greatest tragedians of Italy.
