Description:
A rare and beautifully illustrated collection of classic fairy tales, plus several
Shakespearean plays adapted in story form.
Illustrated throughout with a number of stunning full-colour plates (most of which are by Rackham), plus many b&w illustrations. Front pastedown and endpaper illustrated in blue monochrome. Tipped in image by Arthur Rackham on front board. Blue, marble effect, cloth boards with (once) gilded text. Blind-stamped text and ornaments on spine. Front board slightly wavy, though it is doubtful that this is the result of damp, as there isn't any tell-tale foxing or discolouration inside the book itself. Pages are all lightly tanned, but are otherwise unmarked and free from foxing. Binding is surprisingly tight. Gift inscription marked as 1933, though the book has a decidedly art nouveau feel about it – especially since a lot of the illustrations are dated 1904. Editions from that period have a different coloured binding, however, indicating that this is a later printing. Measures 24 cm × 18 cm (9.6″ × 7.2″). Large 8vo. 447 pp. (SOLD) |
