Description:
This amusing novel, set just before the outbreak of the Second World War, sees Arthur Brown
– a successful businessman with a large house, two cars, and a small family –
misdiagnosed with terminal cancer. He is told that he has 6 months to live, and decides to
explore the Continent to escape from his oppressive wife and children. Whilst there, he meets a
young woman and a romance ensues…
The jacket is scuffed and worn, and has a small tear at the front (see image). There is a 3½ × 3 cm (1.4″ × 1.2″) loss at the back in the lower left corner. The book itself is in very good condition: no marking or foxing whatsoever, despite the use of War Economy paper. Of particular interest is the Voice of Britain propaganda statement (illustrated with b&w logo) on the rear flap: "In every part of the world you can hear broadcasts direct from Great Britain. In every part of the world truthful news has steadily defeated the Axis campaign of lies and slander…". Examples in jackets are extremely scarce. Measures 19 cm × 12.5 cm (7.6″ × 5″).
